5 SEO myths
These are my top 5 SEO myth or misconceptions that many people when they first look to designing web pages believe are important. I hope that this video-cast will help you get your priorities reset when you design your web page and prepare for search engine optimisation and marketing.
1. Keyword meta tags.
Keyword meta tags have not been used by the major search engines for may years. I have not included keyword meta tags on any of my sites that I have produced over the last 3 or 4 years. If you want to put them in then just don’t spend any time on optimising them. There are better things you can do with your time.
2. Keyword density
Keyword density or key-phrase density is old hat. Many years ago you could repeat your major keyword between 2.5% and 3.5% of the time in your content and rank pretty well. Today’s search engines are much more sophisticated. Write your page as you would normally write or speak it and the search engines will like you. The only important things you need to worry about keywords is where you place them on your page and how you support them.
3. Google advertising
You don’t need to advertise on Google adwords to do well in Google organic search results. Neither do you need to have Google adsense ads on your web page. Organic search is completely different to the commercial arms of Google. The same goes for Bing.
4. Update your site frequently
Freshness is important for some types of sites such as news sites or blogs. For most sites though you do not need to continually update your page purely for search engines. I have some pages that still rank number 1 on google even though they have not been changed for 4 or 5 years. Update you pages when they need to be updated with new information. Don’t just update for the sake of it.
5. Sitemaps
Sitemaps have nothing to do with ranking and the position of your site in SERP’s. Sitemaps is all about indexing of your site. You do not need a sitemap to get listed in any of the search engines. I very rarely use site maps and all my sites still rank well in the search results.
I hope this helps you to concentrate on issues that are important with SEO and not to waste your time on issues that have very little to do with ranking well in the search engines.
