1. At the Tourist Information Centre cross the road and turn left and walk along road out of town. After crossing the road at the Abergavenny Hotel look for a right hand turn towards Mill Close. Go down this lane but keep to the left-hand fork which then turns into a footpath to lead down to the River Usk flood plain. Enter the meadows through the gate and cross the footbridge across the River Gavenny. Follow the path to the left and join the footpath alongside the River Usk.

2. Continue alongside the River Usk. You will cross a number of fields and stiles along the way. This is working farming country so there is a high likelihood of meeting livestock so please ensure that dogs are kept on a lead. The Usk Valley offers a great opportunity to see a range of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled and you will see damselflies, birds of prey, waterfowl and there’s even the chance of spotting kingfishers along this stretch of the river.

3. When you reach a metal fence that blocks your path look to your right and you will see a stile. Once you cross the stile immediately turn left and go to the next stile. Cross this stile and look across the field to your right. You should see a metal gate with a wooded stile next to it. Cross this stile and follow the edge of the field to the left. Continue to follow the hedge line and crossing stiles until you come to the field with a house at the far right corner. Stay on the left side of the field until you reach the bottom where there is a stile next to a gate. Cross the stile and join the lane.

4. Turn right along the lane and follow this lane passing the church at Llanwenarth until you come to a fork in the road. Take the right hand fork and continue until you join the main road. Turn right, join the footpath and follow the road passing the hospital back into the centre of Abergavenny.

5. At Tescos turn right and follow the road and walk through the pedestrian area. At the end of the pedestrianised are continue down the road until you arrive back at the Tourist Information Centre.
